Tactx : We believe the technical ability of the England players is at this level. The risk and retain choices come down to a strategy implemented over time rather than to an instruction for a game. For example, in our La Masia article, we write about the cries of 'tranquilo' (calm) that come after winning the ball. A retain model that is built. Gordon and Rogers are two players who thrive in risk, and England scored goals through this strategy in the tournament. As you said, the pressure and occasion may have got to some players. England lacked that control when they won it back with a risk or a retain decision. 

One question we missed from Dale...

The example you gave of Guehi retaining possession in transition and the lack of that later in the game from others - do you think that’s a question of ability of the other players or more an instruction they needed to be given (retain > risk at that stage)? Clearly pressure is a factor at that stage but looking forward, is it something an instruction is more likely to fix, or is it that our players didn’t have the capability to retain in those moments? I remember Henderson I think against Croatia just lumping the ball forward no interest in retention, that makes me think it’s more an instruction than ability or inferiority complex
